About SnapConvert
SnapConvert converts video, audio and image files without uploading them anywhere. It is run by an independent developer and currently supports 241 conversions between 29 formats.
Why it exists
Converting a file should not require handing it to a stranger's server. Screen recordings, voice memos, ID photos and family videos are exactly the kind of files people convert most often, and exactly the kind that should stay private. Modern browsers are capable of doing the work themselves, so this site lets them.
How it works
Images are converted with the browser's built-in image codecs. Video and audio are converted by FFmpeg, the open-source media tool, running inside the page through ffmpeg.wasm, its WebAssembly port. The engine is downloaded once (32 MB) and cached. A longer explanation, including how to verify that nothing is uploaded, is in How in-browser conversion works.
Settings are published
The encoder settings behind the High, Medium and Small options are listed in full in the quality guide, so you can tell what a conversion will do before running it.
Limitations
- Processing speed depends on your device. Phones are slower than laptops, and video is much slower than audio or images.
- Files over 2 GB are not supported, because the whole file has to fit in browser memory.
- DRM-protected media cannot be converted.
- There is no trimming, cropping or resizing; the site converts formats only.
How it is funded
The site shows ads from Google AdSense. There are no paid tiers and no data is sold; there is no data to sell because files never reach us. See the privacy policy and terms of use.
